Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang’s campaign team has reportedly been receiving several death threats as its campaign tour commences through New Hampshire.
Yang’s campaign team has since contacted the FBI to report the threats which came via a series of emails, according to The Hill.
“Recently, the campaign received threats via email regarding the candidate and specific public events,” an official from the campaign was quoted as saying. “Due to certain specific information contained in the emails, and out of an abundance of caution, we immediately contacted the FBI and local enforcement and have been working with them.”
“The candidate’s safety and the safety of the public at-large is our utmost priority and we’ll continue to stay alert while following the guidance of law enforcement to take any necessary security measures. We’ve referred the matter to the FBI for investigation.”
The sender of the email, who went by the name “HitmanYang,” allegedly threatened to shoot members of Yang’s team while they were in the state.
Referencing the campaign’s tweets, the emails warned that if the number of tweets from the candidate reached a threshold, members of Yang’s camp would be shot.
Based on one of the emails, the threats appear to be coming from more than one person. Those involved also reportedly pooled money among themselves to bet on how many tweets Yang’s campaign would post within a week.
The alleged threats come as Yang continues to improve in the survey standings, polling ahead of several other seasoned political candidates.
Yang’s campaign has recently reached another milestone, raising nearly $750,000 on November 30, reports Yahoo.
This marked the Yang campaign team’s record single-day haul, bringing his weekly fundraising total to $2 million.
According to a campaign spokesperson, over 18,000 contributions were made in the 24-hour period at an average of just $41.
