Is This Infectious Japanese Song the Next ‘Gangnam Style’?

With its infectious electronic beats and simple yet catchy lyrics, many say Pen-Pineapple Apple-Pen has the makings to be the next Gangnam Style.

If you haven’t heard it by now, you will soon, and once you do, it will be difficult to get out of your head.

The catchy tune and the hilarious music video was created by 43-year-old Japanese comedian and DJ Kosaka Daimaou, whose real name is Kazuhiko Kosaka, according to Japanese trendy site Spoon and Tamago. Kosaka, who was born in Aomori City, Japan, appeared in the 2012 film “Karasu No Oyayubi” (By Rule of Crow’s Thumb).

In his videos, he plays the character Piko-Taro, the colorful and bubbly singer songwriter with simplistic dance moves. His comic alter-ego was first used in his live performances, but later branched out into into Piko-Taro’s first YouTube video in August, after becoming quite popular.

The song itself, while undeniably catchy, simply features nonsensical lyrics about fruits seemingly getting poked with pens. So far, Pen-Pineapple Apple-Pen, or PPAP, has racked up more than 5 million views since it was uploaded on YouTube in August.

A number of equally hilarious parodies have sprouted online and there’s reason to believe more is yet to come since Piko-Taro’s video has just been recently exposed in Western social media.
