An Instagram account that posts shots of a “hipster” Barbie doll intended to mock the lifestyle photography trend among millennial users is stirring a commotion on the internet.
The account, Socality Barbie, is filled with shots documenting Barbie’s trendy adventures, from staged glamour shots of nature hikes to artsy snapshots of her morning latte. She describes herself in her Instagram profile as an adventurer and a coffee drinker who is all about “that PNW (Pacific Northwest) life,” Jesus, “Authentic Living” and “Socality.”
The mastermind behind Socality Barbie is a wedding photographer from Portland, Oregon, who wishes to remain anonymous in order to maintain hipster Barbie’s authenticity, according to Wired. The woman created the account three months ago and has since amassed 823,000 followers and counting. The photos on her Instagram make fun of people who add hashtags like #liveauthentic, #blessed and #neverstopexploring to their photos.
The photographer, fed up with the conformity of Instagram trends, thought it would be funny to make a satirical account and show how “ridiculous social media has become.” She told Wired:
“People were all taking the same pictures in the same places and using the same captions. I couldn’t tell any of their pictures apart so I thought, ‘What better way to make my point than with a mass-produced doll?’”
The woman behind the account told Buzzfeed she finds it annoying when people do ridiculous things to get a “creative” Instagram photo:
“I’ve sat in coffee shops and watched people set their coffee on the floor while they stand on a chair just to make their morning cup of coffee appear more interesting than it really is.”
Socality Barbie’s creator knows people enjoy looking at pretty pictures of scenic landscapes but also notes the lack of authenticity when it’s overdone:
“I get it, it’s pretty to look at. But it’s so dishonest. Nobody actually lives like this. And it’s so overdone that it’s becoming boring.”
She added that she did not expect her Instagram to go viral:
“I had no idea this many people would find the account funny. I’m glad so many people can laugh about it.
“I think it’s because she’s so relatable. Either your Instagram looks just like hers or you know at least one person whose Instagram does.”
Socality Barbie is gaining so much media attention that she boasts in one of her Instagram captions:
“Had an interview with @wired cuz I’m so much better at @instagram than you!”
