During tonights episode of 60 Minutes, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos introduced Amazon Prime Air, a new delivery system that intends to deliver packages via unmanned aerial drones. The goal of this project is to deliver packages to customers in 30 minutes or less.
My first thought upon hearing the news was “is it April fools?”, however according to the Amazon Prime Air page:

It looks like science fiction, but it’s real. From a technology point of view, we’ll be ready to enter commercial operations as soon as the necessary regulations are in place. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is actively working on rules for unmanned aerial vehicles.

As badass as this looks, Amazon notes that it will take a number of years before Prime Air can be used commercially. This will allow ample time for them to perfect the technology and wait for new FAA rules to be in place to ensure public safety.

We hope the FAA’s rules will be in place as early as sometime in 2015. We will be ready at that time.
